Merry Halloween

So Halloween is fast approaching, the rampant sound of injection molded novelty pumpkins being grabbed off supermarket shelves is ringing in our ears and parents are looking forward to cleaning their sugar intoxicated child's vomit off the carpet. Meanwhile I find myself asking the annual question; what is the point? I can't say I know any pagans or anybody who truly believes in the spiritual significance of the last day of October. When did the tradition of strangers giving children sweets for no particular reason begin? I could look it up but I'm not going to. It just seems like a very odd occurrence when young children and students decide to dress up in bizarre attire for no particular reason. I must add that I don't really enjoy scary movies or dressing up so Halloween is the perfectly designed day to annoy me. People in the U.S. (where I find myself at this very moment) describe it as a holiday. It's not a holiday, 2 weeks in the south of Spain is a holiday! Halloween is a waste of time/money/energy and a measly excuse to make the house stink of pumpkin. I don't care what anybody says pumpkins stink like shit plus all the stuff that is scraped out of them ends up in some bin that is never emptied and stinks up everything for weeks afterward! I don't understand!

It's worse than the marketing who-ha that surrounds Christmas because at least Christmas brings families together to talk about how much they hate the members of the family who aren't there. All Halloween does is embody the same pointless consumptive attitude but you're spending money on shit you are never going to use again. The socks that nanna brought you will at least make good spunk catchers on boxing day!
There is nothing momentous or spiritual about Halloween, it's an event held together by novelty merchandise brought at an inflated price so people don't feel left out from something. In other words: Peer pressured bullshit.
I despise dressing up because it makes me feel a) unoriginal b) dishonest and c) intensely awkward. I'm quite happy being what I am and I don't see the point in dressing up as something 'wacky' just to fit into a social event that has no real basis or ideology behind it. There is no reason to dress as a decrebied whitch other than it's Halloween, so why do it?
Also it represents to me a lack of social confidence and a kind of camouflage just to fit into the chosen evenings social niche. Why can't we go to things how we would like to. Many times at my uni I've been in situations where everybody is dressed up for some sort of theme night and I've refused to join in. It isn't my idea of fun! If you want to dress up, great fill your boots. For me though dressing up as something silly has always been just that, silly. It's the forced complacency that makes me uncomfortable. If I'm trying to have a decent conversation with someone but I'm dressed as a decapitated penguin it's not going anywhere other than into a souless void of how I managed to achieve the effect of a penguins neck being severed, oh fucking fun. It is a waste of time to try and have a night out and engage with people when all you can see is people dressed in costume, it takes away basic expression. It makes everybody the fool which is why some people must feel very comfortable with it. They can escape from themselves for an evening because they are a cowboy or a playboy bunny or a wizard, it's fun to pretend, yay, . That's what I hate about it all, it's disingenuous and then I'm made to feel like a party pooper for not joining in. I have a better time in clothes that I choose to ware on a day to day basis because I don't like feeling like part of a clan and because I like people to know what I'm about from the off; and unfortunately how you represent yourself aesthetically is a massive part of how people perceive you and then judge you. My friend said to me the other day "you have no problem getting dressed in the morning, jeans, tshirt, cap and you're set." I replied that of course, that is how i feel most comfortable. I'm regularly unshaved and unshowered but that's what makes me feel happy and I think that says an awful lot about me to the outside world. I don't so much care about the icing on the cake part of my apperence, styled hair, facial moisteriser, clean socks etc as just getting myself out the door without being naked so I can go and enjoy another day. I hope that's the message people get anyway. It's probably more along the lines of 'this slob hasn't seen a bar of soap since 1995.'
I think most of my best friends took the latter line of thought but decided I must be a half way decent guy hence why they're my best friends. Which on a side note is an important point, you're best friends are people which thought the worst of you yet still decided to be your friend, same with partners I think to. Maybe that's just me though.
So yeah the point of the matter is that Halloween is a fucking stupid soulless corporate activity and you should all be ashamed for participating in it. If you want to have a fun don't let Hallmark decide when you should have it and if you can only have fun dressed as a goblin maybe you want to look into some World of Warcraft roleplay or something.

this year I'm dressing as a poor Dan Aykroyd in 'Trading Places", maybe Jamie Lee Curtis will show her tits, but I doubt it.

"the best thing about Halloween is if you get wasted and vomit all over yourself it doesn't matter because you're never going to wear those clothes ever again!" - Zack just completely ass fucks my argument.
